DeAnn Knighton, ACMHC (She/Her)

Therapist

I hold a bachelor’s degree in Gender Studies from the University of Utah and an MA in Counseling at the Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School of Addiction Studies. After more than 20 years as a leader in healthcare sales and recruitment, I felt called to shift my professional identity toward a field I’ve long been passionate about: mental health and the growing need for compassionate, evidence-based care.

My counseling approach is grounded in a person-centered, integrative theoretical orientation. I believe in meeting each client with empathy, authenticity, and unconditional positive regard—core tenets of humanistic therapy. I tailor treatment to each individual, drawing from a range of evidence-based practices including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, and Narrative Therapy. I view the therapeutic relationship as collaborative and healing in itself, and I work to create a space where clients feel seen, heard, and empowered to grow.

I believe in the power of story as a tool for healing and transformation. The narratives we carry—about our past, our relationships, and ourselves—can either keep us stuck or help us move forward. In therapy, I help clients explore and reshape these stories, using both pragmatic tools and deep reflection to support their journey toward healing and self-actualization.

In my own life, I’ve learned to balance a strong inner world with grounding practices. Music, movement, and creative projects help me manage stress and stay present. Time with my family, friends, and pets reenergizes me, and I spend as much time outdoors as I can—camping, hiking, and paddleboarding. I’m passionate about recovery advocacy, particularly around improving aftercare and continuity of support for those living with substance use disorders. I also enjoy writing and podcasting on topics related to mental health, identity, and recovery.
